First edition of Bengal Association’s Film Festival to showcase a wide range of films and conversations

Films from all over the world will be showcased in New Delhi at BeyondBounds, which focuses on short films and documentaries.

Bengal Association's Film Festival cfBeyondBounds will be held at Muktadhara Auditorium, Connaught Place, New Delhi.

Films from all over the world including Italy’s Miss Agata, France’s Brink of Tears (2022), and Bulgaria’s August 13 (2022), among others will be showcased in New Delhi at BeyondBounds – a two-day film festival – which focuses on short films and documentaries.

The festival will also feature Rajaditya Banerjee’s documentary, WaterWala (2017), which focuses on the last vastiwalas of Kolkata whose job of supplying water in compact leather bags to people across the city is growing redundant in a changing world. There will also be screenings of Nepali director Puru Lamsal’s short film, Ox Fiesta (2022), on the tradition of ox fighting in some of Nepal’s oldest villages, and Shaunak Sen’s Oscar-nominated, All That Breathes (2022), followed by a discussion with Sen.

The diverse range of films is curated by the Bengal Association. “We feel that short films and documentaries are not getting proper attention. So we came upon the idea to hold a festival, international in nature, while also including various languages of India,” says Sumanta K Bhowmick, author and curator of the festival.

Bhowmick adds that the festival is keeping in mind the changing landscape of how films are made and watched today. “We realised that people are more interested in looking at shorter films, especially since COVID. People shoot films on mobiles and DSLRs now,” he says.

Besides screenings, the festival will also host a slew of conversations, including one by musician Deepak Castelino, who will speak on music and film. There is also a food festival titled Meghna-Jamuna food festival featuring culinary experiences from both India and Bangladesh.
The festival was inaugurated by eminent social worker and Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter, Tara Gandhi Bhattacharya.

On December 9 and 10, at Muktadhara Auditorium, Connaught Place, New Delhi. Entry is free.
