Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee recently discussed his choice to join the television show Swabhiman. He revealed that he was facing financial difficulties at the time, and his peers were beginning to doubt whether he could succeed as an actor. Manoj also shared an encounter with Mahesh Bhatt, who sensed his dissatisfaction with television work and encouraged him not to give up on the city and his dreams, assuring him that it held greater opportunities for him.
On the podcast Chalchitra Talks, Manoj said, “I was also contemplating if I was a good actor. I was not getting any work despite doing theatre. People who used to admire me, they also started having doubts about me.”
Manoj recalled that in those tough times, he got an offer for the serial Swabhiman. He said, “I got a call from the production house of Swabhiman. I didn’t want to do TV. I was a stubborn person. I thought I would join TV and become corrupt. I thought I would lose the focus of doing quality work. My friend forcibly took me to the office and I was about to say no, but he said, ‘No, he will do it.’”
The Joram actor said that everything worked in his favour after joining Swabhiman and people started loving him from the first day. Manoj also recalled how Mahesh Bhatt recognised his disappointment of not doing films and advised him not to leave Bombay.
Manoj said, “Swabhiman was a training ground for me for bigger things like Satya. Mahesh Bhatt was one of the producers of Swabhiman. He told me ‘you are in the league of Naseer (Naseeruddin Shah). You can’t leave this city, I think looking at your eyes you are disappointed. Don’t leave this city, this city will give you more than you ever imagined.’”
The actor said that he did a film with Mahesh while shooting Swabhiman and towards the end he also did the cult classic Satya.
