Actor Zayed Khan spoke about arguably the biggest hit of his career, the 2004 film Main Hoon Na, in which he starred alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Amrita Rao. The film was directed by choreographer Farah Khan, who was making her directorial debut, and is still remembered for the hit one-shot song sequence, ‘Chale Jaise Hawayein’.

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Zayed recalled shooting that song, and the intense rehearsals that he was put through prior to it. Because the song was being shot in one take, it was important for each performer to get their steps right. But just as the camera was about to turn to Zayed, he got distracted because a dancer next to him ‘started having a fit’.

He said, “If you tell me to dance at a night club, I was an amazing dancer. But if you ask me to do 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4… Geeta (Kapur) was in charge of me for one month, and she ‘ragdofied’ me so badly, I can’t tell you. I had two left feet for Bollywood dancing. I became a dancer because of that one-shot song that Farah was taking. We were shooting in Darjeeling, and the camera was about to come to me after two minutes of Amrita, and all of a sudden, a dancer falls down. He was having a fit, because of the high altitude. I was thinking, ‘Oh my God, what should I do? Should I save him or continue with the step’.”

Farah commanded Zayed to continue, but he tripped over the other dancer. In his head, Zayed thought that he had already messed up his grand entry in the film. So he called ‘cut’. This made Farah furious. “She got so mad at me. She was like, ‘How dare you say cut on my set?’ I said, ‘Farah, there are people dying down here, what do you want me to do?’ She almost threw a chappal at me,” he said.

Main Hoon Na went on to become a blockbuster, and launched Farah’s directorial career. Zayed, however, couldn’t match that level of success. After several years out of the limelight, he is now planning a comeback.
