When close friends Dilip Kumar and Sunil Dutt ‘helped victims of the civil riots in Mumbai’; Saira Banu recalls
Dilip Kumar and Sunil Dutt stayed in the Pali Hill area in Bandra, Mumbai. The two were not only contemporaries but also thickest of friends, shares Saira Banu.

As the world celebrated friendship day over the weekend, Saira Banu has shared anecdotes about her late husband Dilip Kumar‘s thick bond with the late actor-politician Sunil Dutt. Kumar and Dutt were not only contemporaries but also neighbours for years before they passed away.
Saira took to Instagram to share how Dilip Kumar and Sunil Dutt were two icons who shared a great bond not only as colleagues but as true friends. Saira wrote, “I am joyous as I share stories and moments that Sahib shared and lived with people that he called friends. Sahib was known to be a lovable and caring person but only a few people knew that he was a great friend too… one of them was Sunil Dutt.”

Saira added how the two superstars came together to “aid the film fraternity” whenever needed. She wrote, “Dilip Sahib and Dutt Sahab were not only neighbours but also dearest of friends. They were both great icons who did not isolate themselves in their own luxurious lives but always came to aid the film fraternity, whether it was a matter of the industry at large or some crisis.”
Saira then shared how Dilip Kumar and Sunil Dutt also helped victims of civil riots in Mumbai. “When there was big trouble and heartache Dilip Sahib and Dutt Sahab would burn the midnight lamp together and would pow-wow into finding solutions, be it 3 in the morning. or 4, whether it meant travelling to and fro to Delhi or helping victims of the civil riots in Mumbai.”
Dilip Kumar and Sunil Dutt stayed in the Pali Hill area in Bandra, Mumbai. Dilip and Saira’s bungalow is a local landmark that stands on a sprawling 2000 square meters of land. Sunil Dutt’s bungalow, which has now been turned into a high rise, is called Imperial Heights, and is in the same lane as Dilip Kumar’s bungalow. His son Sanjay Dutt continues to reside there.
