When Amitabh Bachchan stopped talking to Jaya Bachchan, his kids to get into K3G’s ‘rude’ Yashvardhan Raichand’s zone: ‘He did not stir’

Karan Johar’s blockbuster movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is still considered a “classic”, known for its extravagant sets and Amitabh Bachchan’s performance as Yashvardhan Raichand. Nikkhil Advani, the film’s associate director, once revealed how Amitabh went the extra mile to get into his character before a key scene with Shah Rukh Khan, even refraining from speaking to his own family temporarily.

In an interview with Rediff.com, Advani remembered a scene from the film just before the interval. It’s where Raichand throws his adopted son Rahul (played by Shah Rukh Khan) out of the house for marrying Anjali (portrayed by Kajol). The cameraman, Kiran Deohans, was told to keep Amitabh Bachchan in the foreground, while Rahul and Anjali, stood far away at the door. Amitabh was supposed to just deliver the dialogue, “Aaj tumne sabit kar diya ki tum mere khoon nahin hi (Today, you proved that you are not my blood).”

AD Advani admitted to making a scheduling mistake, informing Amitabh that they would shoot the scene in two days when it was actually scheduled for three. He said, “Later, when I apologised, Jayaji, who is like a mother to all the ADs, reprimanded me, saying I had no idea what I had done. ‘Since the last two days, he has not been speaking to me or the kids, just moping around and being rude to everybody,’ she confided. ‘Why?’ I asked, surprised. She explained that he had been getting into the ‘zone’. ‘But he has only one line to deliver!’ I exclaimed.”

He explained that Amitabh later revealed this scene was particularly tough for him because it wasn’t anything like the real him. Although he knew it was wrong for Raichand to disown his adopted son for marrying a “halwai ki beti”, he had to stay in character. They shot the scene over two days, during which Amitabh didn’t move from his spot where he had to deliver that one line.

Advani added, “The three plastic chairs taped together on which he sits would be brought to the set every day. And he would perch on them, standing or walking towards the camera only when the shot demanded it. He did not stir. Even when the camera was on Shah Rukh and Kajol or zooming in on his back, he sat there, Zen-like.” Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, often referred to as K3G, also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Jaya among others.
