What I edited out

Aatma begins with Maya’s dream where she sees her family dead and her daughter, nia, about to jump off the balcony.

In her second dream, nia is digging a grave and then vanishing, only to appear dead at the foot of the grave with an old witch like woman announcing,‘Woh aa raha hai’ I edited this out because it came a little too soon after the first nightmare and took away the emphasis from the real psychological warfare being conducted by Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s character.

The song Jeeley zyaada, which comes during the journey to Panchgani was removed and I made it a short musical interlude because the song didn’t match the tone of the film at that point.

I also cut my favourite scene in the film,a conversation between Bipasha and Jaideep ahlawat on nia’s birthday.

Jaideep is a brilliant actor and his performance kept blindsiding us to the extent that the pace of the film dropped when the scene appeared.

I cut this scene and it haunts me to date.

even if it were indulgence,Jaideep’s performance was worth it.

I put the scene back for the film’s television cut.
