Wamiqa Gabbi is a rising star in the truest sense. The actor, who first appeared on screen in Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor’s Jab We Met as a young teen, has now created a space for herself in the film industry with projects like Grahan, Modern Love Mumbai and Chennai chapters and her biggest show till date, Vikramaditya Motwane’s Jubilee. The actor will now be seen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Charlie Chopra & The Mystery of Solang Valley and Khufiya.
In this interview with indianexpress.com, Wamiqa talks about how she’s not a trained actor, and hence when she gets opportunities to work with filmmakers like Vishal Bhardwaj and Vikramaditya Motwane, she feels overwhelmed. The actor reveals how she’s been learning her craft on set and shares an update on her next, Atlee’s VD18 with Varun Dhawan.
Wamiqa is a chirpy, bubbly young actor who doesn’t take herself too seriously and shares exactly what’s in her heart. She feels “overwhelmed” to have been collaborating with ace filmmakers like Vishal Bhardwaj and Vikramaditya Motwane so early in her life. The actor said, “I am just so glad that I am getting this opportunity to work with filmmakers like Vishal (Bhardwaj) sir, Vikram (Vikramaditya Motwane) sir and that too at such an early stage in my career. It is overwhelming. These are the filmmakers that I have always admired. There was a time when I had decided that I have to work really hard all my life to finally get an opportunity to work with these stalwarts, and it has happened already, so I am very grateful. I have done four projects with Vishal sir, and it’s been a beautiful dream come true.”
Wamiqa Gabbi admits that while she’s not a trained actor, she always dreamed to be an actor. However, the Jubilee star says that when she appeared on the big screen in Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor’s Jab We Met, she was not sure if aspiring actors who don’t come from film families could ever become lead actors.
Wamiqa said, “I never had a plan. I didn’t know what I would do in the future, so I am very happy with the journey that I am on. Even when I did Jab We Met, I was in 8th class when I shot that film. I would wonder and imagine if I’d ever be able to play a main lead or play a character which has a journey of their own because I was one of Geet’s cousin sisters in the background. I was shooting with Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor, both coming from a film family. So it made me wonder if I’d ever be able to play lengthy characters. Was it even possible for me to be a full-time actor or work with good filmmakers? And today it has all happened. I remember how I always wanted to do this in the back of my mind but never told anyone. People say that they manifest things, but I never shared it with anyone. I just kept thinking about it in my head.”
After showcasing her acting chops and being mentored by some of the best filmmakers, Wamiqa is now ready to return to the big screen as she will be sharing screen with Varun Dhawan in Atlee’s VD18, directed by Kalees. The actor has worked in several Tamil, Telugu, Malayam and Punjabi films in the initial days of her career.
On VD18, the actor said, “I still have to start shooting for it. They have already started, now I have to join them. I am just overwhelmed. For a person like me to be working with a maker like him. The fact that I could be a part of a film backed by him, I was overwhelmed. Murad (Khetani) sir trusted me with this. It is like a dream come true.”
She added, “I am very happy to come back to theatrical films with Atlee sir’s film. I am so happy that my next theatrical film is going to be with Atlee sir and Murad sir. That’s very exciting. I am also very excited to be a part of this film because Altee sir has just given one of the biggest films, Jawan. So, I know that he knows the heart and the pulse of the audience. All the projects that he has helmed have attracted a pan-India audience. With all the things happening with me, I have no idea how they are happening, but they are happening and I am glad that I am a part of it. I feel I have so much more to do as an actor and person, but God has been kind to me. I want to make the most of it.”
