Vivek Oberoi made his debut in the movies in the early 2000s and soon afterwards, he had many successes at the box office. While Vivek’s career suffered from a lull in the late 2000s, the actor continued to appear in the movies so when his cousin Akshay Oberoi made his debut in Bollywood in 2010, Vivek was an established actor. But, as per Akshay’s previous interviews, the two did not share a “real relationship.” However, Vivek has now said this is not the case and after reading Akshay’s interviews, when Vivek asked him about his comments, Akshay reportedly said that he was “misinterpreted.”

In a chat with Hindustan Times, Vivek was asked about Akshay’s comments about the cousins not being in touch. “I did ask him myself what happened, and what is this interview about? He said ‘No, it’s been misinterpreted’, but best that he speaks for himself. As far as I’m concerned, I love Akshay and I am very proud of what he has done,” he said and added that they are always there for each other’s birthdays and other celebrations. “As a family, we are always there at each other’s birthdays. They always come to our house on Diwali or my parents’ anniversary. So, we have a lot of celebrations together and we have some great memories of growing up together,” he said.

Vivek is the son of veteran actor Suresh Oberoi. He said that he was very proud of Akshay for making his own way, without anyone’s help. “The one thing though, which is true and I’m very proud of him for, is that he has made his path his own way, just like I’m proud that I did my own way too. I didn’t have any uncle, aunt, chacha, taya, mama saying ‘I’m gonna launch you and you are going to get a break because of me’. I never had that kind of any support system. Whatever I am today, I have been through the grind, worked hard and God’s been kind,” he said.

He added that Akshay also did not seek any family member’s help for getting a chance in the movies. “And the same goes for Akshay. Every bit of success and acclaim that he has is well deserved, because he is the only one responsible for it, and that’s how it should be. It shouldn’t be because of whose nephew you are, whose cousin you are, or whose friend you are. It should be based on pure merit. And Akshay has achieved everything on his own merit and I am very proud of it,” he said.

In an earlier chat with Free Press Journal, Akshay said that he couldn’t approach Vivek because they didn’t share any “real relationship”. “It’s not like I could call and approach him either, you know. Unfortunately, I don’t say it with pride, I say it with sadness – that there was no real relationship. So, what would I call and ask from him? I just went about my own way,” he said. In another chat with YouTube channel Cyrus Says, Akshay suggested that his and Vivek’s family had a bit of a feud. “Unfortunately, for whatever reason, there wasn’t really a line of communication. Like I couldn’t pick up the phone and talk to him about it. Just the way it was. I never did it. He never offered it,” he said.

Akshay will next be seen in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, also starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor.
