Virat Kohli says he was ‘nervous, shivering’ when he met Anushka Sharma for the first time: ‘She was a proper actor, how was I…’

Virat said that when he walked on the set five minutes before Anushka and was very nervous about what he was going to say to her. “I was just standing there and she walked in,” he recalled. The cricketer said that he had no idea how tall she was and she walked in wearing “decently high heels” so the first thing that slipped out of his mouth was a comment on her high heels.

“The first thing I told her was…She was hearing decently high heels. It wasn’t too high. Someone must have told her that he is going to look like a dwarf in front of you so just make sure your heels are not too high. So the first thing I told her, when I saw her heels was ‘didn’t you get anything higher to wear?’ and she was like ‘excuse me?'”

Virat said that he instantly knew that his opening line was pretty bad but as the shoot went on and they started talking, he figured that they had a lot in common. “I kind of figured out along that whole day that she’s actually a very normal person. We got talking (and found) our backgrounds were pretty similar. So we could connect on the same experiences, the same things that a usual middle class household would experience. So we really connected on those experiences and from there on, we became friends and then gradually we started dating,” he said.

Virat said they did not immediately start dating each other. They spoke for a long time and met up a few times and “then, over a decent period of time, we started dating.”

Virat recalled another incident, which he confessed was quite “awkward.” He shared that in his mind, they were already dating but Anushka wasn’t on the same page as him. “Actually, I thought I was dating her already. We had hung out for a few months. Then one day, I remember I sent her a message ‘When I used to be single, I would do this and that’ and she was like ‘what do you mean used to be?’ I had already decided in my mind and heart that we were dating so that was again a little awkward but then eventually she was like ‘this is a decent guy’.”

Anushka and Virat tied the knot in Italy in 2018. The couple welcomed their daughter Vamika in 2021.
