Actor Vikram said that there are certain films which work better in Hindi than they would in Tamil, because of the huge difference in the cinema going audience of the respective regions. Vikram, who appeared on Ranveer Allahabadia’s podcast recently, revealed that he loved Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12t Fail, as well as Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, two mid-sized films which also worked at the Hindi box office.
“I loved that film and called Vidhu Vinod Chopra. I also really liked Laapataa Ladies and the boy (Sparsh Shrivastava) in it, who was also in Jamtara, the series I loved. The problem is, we can’t do films like that. The whole market goes for a toss.” Vikram explained that because he is a star, any project that he takes up becomes massive, which in turn increases expectations.
The actor said it is important to understand that Hindi and Tamil are two vastly different markets and one can’t try both and play a “character” role, unless it is on a smaller scale.” You can’t do that, your market goes for a dip. I have done it before, where I started doing smaller films just for characters. Then that starts affecting the other films. It is a very tricky thing,” he added.
Vikram was last seen in the Tamil action adventure film Thangalaan. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film featured Vikram in five roles and was met with mixed reviews. Set during the British Raj, the film also starred Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, Pasupathy and Hari Krishnan.
