Vidhu Vinod Chopra is known for being a hard taskmaster on set and recently, director Siddharth P Malhotra, who was an assistant to VVC on the set of Kareeb, recalled how the director was extremely particular about the way he wanted things done. Kareeb starred Bobby Deol, who was fairly new to the movies at the times, and Shabana, who was then introduced as Neha. A few years later, Shabana stopped working in the movies and married actor Manoj Bajpayee. Siddharth recalled that VVC wanted Shabana to live in an apartment in Bandra where no one would see her, as he wanted to introduce her to the rest of the world. Siddharth was kept in-charge of shielding Shabana from the public eye.
He shared with Siddharth Kannan, “Vinod sir had kept me in-charge of Shabana. She was supposed to be kept in an apartment somewhere in Bandra. He wanted the world to see het only the day he brings her out.” He also recalled that VVC expected Shabana to have a Madhubala-like quality when she performed in the film so, she was shown tapes of Madhubala’s films.
Siddharth P Malhotra recalled another incident from the set of Kareeb where Vidhu Vinod Chopra was engrossed in getting the right shot during the magic hour that even when Bobby spotted a water snake near him, the director went on without calling cut. Siddharth recalled the shoot of the song “Chori Chori” where a particular part required the actors to be underwater. While the shot was going on, Bobby spotted a water snake and immediately alerted the director who didn’t call cut because they were starting to lose the desired natural light. “There was a water snake close to Bobby and he kept saying ‘Vinod, there’s a snake here.’” As soon as the shot was done, Bobby ran in the opposite direction.
In the same 2001 interview, Bobby had said that VVC gave Shabana a “tough time” and would “yell at her constantly.” But, he was treated differently because of his surname. He said, “No one pulled me up, maybe because my father’s famous.”
