Vedaan, starring John Abraham, Sharvari Wagh and Tamannaah Bhatia, was released in cinemas on Independence Day. The film faced a three-way clash at the box office, alongside the horror comedy Stree 2 and Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein. While Vedaa lags far behind Stree 2, the action drama out-performed Akshay’s film.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Vedaa earned Rs 6.52 crore in domestic market on day one of release. The film made Rs 6.5 crore from its Hindi version, and earned Rs 50 lakh each in Tamil and Telugu regions. Stree 2, on the other hand, earned a whopping Rs 54 crore on day one, and Khel Khel Mein earned around Rs 5 crore.

This has turned out to be John’s biggest opening in six years, after his 2018 Independence Day blockbuster, Satyamev Jayate, which made Rs 19 crore on day one. However, John’s biggest opening remains Siddharth Anand’s spy thriller Pathaan (2023) which starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. John has predominantly delivered single-digit openings in the last few years, with films such as Ek Villain Returns (Rs 7 crore), Attack (Rs 3 crore), Satyamev Jayate 2 (Rs 3 crore), and Mumbai Saga (Rs 2.8 crore).

Directed by Kal Ho Naa Ho’s Nikkhil Advani, Vedaa received mixed reviews from film critics. Their last film together, Batla House, made Rs 14 crore on opening day. The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote in her review, “John Abraham is as Abraham always is — slicing, dicing and keeping the villains at bay with impassive ferocity, in some of the most kinetic action sequences seen recently.” She gave the film a two star rating.
