The Great Indian Family box office collection day 2: Vicky Kaushal’s film sees marginal growth amid Jawan’s rule, mints Rs 3.2 crore
The Great Indian Family box office collection day 2: Amid Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan dominance, Vicky Kaushal's film earned a dismissive Rs 1.80 crore on Saturday.
Poster of The Great Indian Family. Even though Yash Raj Films’ The Great Indian Family was sold as a ‘family’ entertainer, not many are going to the theatres to watch it. The film, starring Vicky Kaushal and Manushi Chhillar, had a weak start at the box office, opening at just Rs 1.40 crore on Friday. On Saturday, the Vijay Krishna Acharya directorial saw marginal growth as it netted Rs 1.80 crore, reported industry tracker Sacnilk. With this, the two-day collection stands at Rs 3.20 crore.
This is a significant drop for Vicky Kaushal, whose previous film, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, minted Rs 5.40 cr on just its first day at the box office. Even on a weekend, The Great Indian Family saw a negligible 12.11 percent occupancy at the box office, with night and evening shows getting 14.74 and 13.93 percent, respectively. While afternoon and morning saw only 11.46 and 8.32 percent occupancy.
The sustained dominance of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan has also probably affected The Great Indian Family. The Atlee-directed actioner has already crossed Pathaan’s collection in 17 days, having earned more than Rs 546 crore. Globally, the film is expected to cross Rs 1000 crore in a couple of days.
The Great Indian Family receives poor reviews
Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya of Dhoom 3 and Thugs of Hindostan fame, the film revolves around a young man named Bhajan Kumar, a singer who comes from a family of priests and religious men. He rues that he is unable to enjoy the regular life of a young adult or romance any girl with everyone considering him a religious figure. Things change when the details of his birth and lineage come to the surface.
Indian Express’ film critic Shubhra Gupta wrote in her review, “The Great Indian Family is just the kind of film Bollywood shouldn’t be making more of. Not because it doesn’t have a topical, much-needed idea, but because having a great premise isn’t enough. Diluting it with lax execution does more harm than good.”
Vicky Kaushal plays Bhajan Kumar, a local singer in YRF’s The Great Indian Family.
When Vicky Kaushal thought he’s not ‘protagonist material’
In an earlier interview with indianexpress.com, Vicky Kaushal described himself as a “regular kid who was interested in studying, playing cricket and watching movies”. He confessed that the right things happened for him at the right time, and hence he’s never looking back at his struggling days in a bad light. Sharing how he’s emerged as an actor at a time when nobody, including him, thought he was “protagonist material”.
He shared, “In everyone’s journey, be it an actor or a technician or anyone, right things always happen at the right time. It took me five years to get Masaan. At that time, there was no space for a film like Masaan, there was no space for an actor like Vicky Kaushal playing the protagonist. I think whatever has happened in my life till now, personal and professional, everything has happened at the right time and in the most beautiful way. So, I have utmost faith in the universe that it’ll figure out stuff for me.”
The Great Indian Family also stars Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, Sadi Siddiqui, Alka Amin and Srishti Dixit among others.
