Divya Khosla Kumar stayed in a slum to prepare for her new movie, Ek Chatur Naar, directed by Umesh Shukla. The film also stars Neil Nitin Mukesh, Suniel Shetty, and Chhaya Kadam. In an interview, Divya said that she had to literally slum it out at Badshah Nagar in Lucknow, and was taken aback by the conditions there. She said that the residents of the slum had a positive attitude towards life, despite their difficulties. Divya is married to T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar, with whom she has one son. She has worked as a director in the past, and has also acted in several films in recent years.

Appearing on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa’s YouTube channel, Divya opened up about her experiences in the slum. She said, “In this movie, I play a woman from the slums, so I actually had to stay in the slums. I stayed there, I lived there. It was very difficult. The character I play is nothing like me; she’s street-smart, she’s a ‘naagin’, she knows exactly who stab in the back.”

Haarsh said that he feels a pang when he sees the inequality around him, and asked Divya if she had a similar experience in the slums. She said, “I felt that the people there are more satisfied and happy. They’re carefree because they have no ambitions. They would invite me to their houses for tea. I shouldn’t say this, but women there would only be taking out lice from each other’s hair. I had lice in my hair too after spending time there. It was quiet dirty; there was an open sewer there.”

Divya said that the production crew constructed three makeshift homes in the slum, one of which was given to her. “I stayed overnight as well, and my hut was right next to the sewer,” she said, adding, “The first few days were very difficult because of the smell, but I became used to it after a while.” Divya said that she filmed for around 20 days in the slum, and was envious of Neil, because he was given pristine costumes and didn’t have to spend time in the slum.

She previously spoke about her slum experience on Archana Puran Singh’s vlog. “Oh My God! It was an open naala, I was standing at the verge of the naala. I was this close to falling in there. I was extremely scared,” she said. In the past, Divya has starred in films such as Satyameva Jayate 2, Yaariyan 2, and Savi, all of which were co-produced by her husband and box office flops. She has also directed the films Yaariyan and Sanam Re. According to T-Series’ website, the business is worth $120 million (Rs 1,000 crore).
