Commemorating the 140th birth anniversary of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, the makers of the upcoming film Swatantrya Veer Savarkar released the first teaser of the biopic.

Helmed by Randeep Hooda, who is also playing the role of Savarkar, the film is produced by Anand Pandit, Sandeep Singh, Sam Khan and Yogesh Rahar, apart from the director himself.

The 73-second teaser of the film begins with a monologue by Savarkar (Hooda), saying: “The freedom struggle lasted for 90 years. But it was fought only by a handful of people. The rest were hungry for power.”

“Gandhiji was not a bad person. But if he hadn’t stood so firm on his non-violence ideology, then India would have been a free country 35 years before it finally did,” he adds as the promo video says: “the most wanted Indian by the British”, “the most feared revolutionary”, and “the man who inspired Bhagat Singh, Subhas Chandra Bose, Khudiram Bose, and the armed revolution”.

The remaining part of the teaser gives a glimpse of Savarkar’s journey over the years. “Golden Lanka was considered precious too. But when someone’s freedom is at stake, then be it Ravan Raj or British Raj, it will eventually be burnt to the ground,” he asks one of the characters as the film’s makers pose a question on-screen: “Who killed his story?”

With Randeep Hooda looking seamlessly like Savarkar and incidents showing how the Indians were treated by the British, the promo video promises an engaging period drama.

While Arvind Krishna is heading the photography department, Nilesh Wagh is in charge of production design and Rajesh Pandey is the editor of the film. Mathias Duplessy has composed the film’s background score.

The teaser of this film comes hours after Telugu superstar Ram Charan announced his first production venture titled The India House, a pan-India project that sheds light on the India House, a student residence that existed between 1905 and 1910 at Cromwell Avenue in Highgate, North London, with which many like Savarkar, Bhikaji Cama, VN Chatterjee, MPT Acharya and Lala Har Dayal were associated.
