Sushmita Sen recalls having Salman Khan’s Maine Pyar Kiya posters as a teenager: ‘He said we must make Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya with you’

Sushmita Sen first worked with Salman Khan in the 1999 film Biwi No 1 but she had been a fan of the star since his debut film Maine Pyar Kiya, In fact, Sushmita, in a recent conversation, admitted that as a teenager, she used to have Salman’s posters from his debut film in her room and she considered them “sacrosanct.”

At an event shared on Shipra Neeraj’s YouTube channel, Sushmita shared that as a teenager, whenever she got any pocket money, she would spend it on Salman’s posters. “Whatever pocket money I got, I would buy Salman Khan posters from that and in those days, Maine Pyar Kiya had released so I even had the picture of the kabootar from that film because it was from a Salman Khan film. My parents always said that if the homework is not done on time, we will remove those posters so I would always finish my homework on time because those posters were sacrosanct. I was in love with this man,” she recalled.

Salman played the lead role of Prem in the film with Bhagyashree. Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the film shot Salman into stardom and made him famous as the boy-next-door Prem. Sushmita said that she met Salman many years later when she was doing her first film with him, David Dhawan’s Biwi No 1 and they gradually became friends.

“We became friends and I told him this story. Then one day, he tells me that he saw a picture of mine as a 15-year-old and there’s a poster of his film behind me so I said I told you that I had a poster in my room. So he asked ‘which was your favourite film?’ I said ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. He went to David and he said ‘we have to make Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya with Sushmita Sen,” she recalled with a smile.

Also starring Katrina Kaif and Sohail Khan, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya released in 2005.
