‘Sunny Deol beat up Gunda director for inserting dad Dharmendra into a sex scene’: Dabangg director chickened out after remembering this story

Dabangg director Abhinav Kashyap revealed that he initially approached Dharmendra for the role that was eventually played by Vinod Khanna, but he chickened out during the meeting.

Dabangg director Abhinav Kashyap, the brother of filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, recalled his traumatic experience of working with Salman Khan on the film, and said that he rarely had a say in the film’s casting. In an interview, Abhinav said that Sonakshi Sinha was brought on board without his approval, but fortunately, he had a good time working with her. However, he gradually realised that he wouldn’t be kept in the loop for major decisions, which were made by Salman and his brothers, Arbaaz and Sohail. Describing them as ‘criminals’, Abhinav said that there was a reason why he wasn’t called back for Dabangg 2 and Dabangg 3.

In a recent interview with SCREEN, Abhinav described Salman as a ‘goon’, and he stood by his comments in a new chat with Bollywood Thikana. “It was consensual at the beginning. They would tell me to dream big, and I ended up casting Anupam Kher and Om Puri. Recalling his failed pitch to Dharmendra for the role that eventually went to Vinod Khanna, Abhinav said, “I met him, and he held my hand and said to me, ‘Beta, only offer me a role that’s substantial, otherwise don’t.’ Around that time, there were murmurs of Sunny Deol having beaten up Kanti Shah for duping Dharamendra into doing a wrong scene. I got scared. Dharmendra has massive hands, and I didn’t know if he was expecting a main role.”

It was Salman Khan who suggested approaching Vinod Khanna, whom Abhinav Kashyap met in his Malabar Hill house. “Sohail was the one who would do the money discussions with everybody,” Abhinav said, adding that he approached Dimple Kapadia in a similar manner. He said that the only person he batted for was Sonu Sood, who cut an imposing figure on screen. But, he said, Salman became ‘insecure’ of Sonu’s physique.

In a recent interview with SCREEN, Abhinav had lashed out at Salman and his family, alleging mistreatment. “Salman has never involved. He is not even interested in acting, and he hasn’t been since the last 25 years. He does a favour by turning up to work. He is more into the power of being a celebrity, but he is not interested in acting. He is a gunda (goon). I was not aware of this before Dabangg. Salman badtameez hai, ganda insaan hai (Salman is ill-mannered, he is a bad person),” he said. Abhinav went on to direct the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Besharam, which flopped at the box office and earned poor reviews.

In a 2017 mid-day article, the story of Sunny allegedly attacking Kanti Shah was explained. It was the 90s, and Dharmendra’s star had naturally faded. During this time, the veteran did a string of B-grade and C-grade movies, some of which were made by Kanti Shah, best known for Gunda. He called Dharmendra in to do a scene in which he’s having a heart attack, and later allegedly re-edited the scene to make it seem as if Dharmendra was having sex. “When the film first released in Punjab, what Dharam Paaji’s fans saw was the old man orgasming in bed with a naked woman from an X-rated movie super-imposed next to him,” the report read, adding, “(Sunny) called Kanti over to his office in Juhu’s Sunny Super Sound, under the pretext of a script narration, and gave him a dhulai with his ‘dhai kilo haath’ that I’m told still echoes in that fourth floor sound-proof room.”

Sunny Deol recently bounced back after more than a decade of disappointment with Gadar 2. He was last seen in the film Jaat, and will next appear in Rajkumar Santoshi’s Lahore: 1947, and then in Ramayana.
