Stree 3: Dinesh Vijan announces third installment of Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi film

Calling the Stree franchise ‘paisa vasool’ series of films, Vijan said, “Stree 2 is like a mothership. It answers a lot of questions that Stree 1 raised. It also tells you what the connections are. What will come next. After Stree 2 would be a film called Thama, which we’ll tell you about later. We have already written Stree 3, so the gap will be less. One thing I can tell you about Stree 2 is it is bigger, madder and crazier. The trailer is only 10 per cent because it has a lot of visual effects in it and we want to leave that for the theatre. But if you come in, it is Maddock’s most paisa vasool film.”

Dinesh Vijan also shared why he created the horror comedy universe. “We’ve put comedy in horror because I can’t watch horror films. I think there are a lot of people like me who cannot watch clean horror. That’s why we came up with the horror comedy universe.”

After the unprecedented success of Stree in 2019, the makers were expected to release the second installment without much delay. However, it took over five years for them to release Stree 2. On the delay, the film’s director Amar Kaushik said, “We didn’t only have to make the film because the first film worked. We wanted to make a film well. We wanted the perfect story, the perfect screenplay. From horror to humour, it should be one notch higher than Stree, and that’s why we took time. In the middle of all that, we were also building the (horror comedy) universe. We had to join the dots, connect stories, so there was a lot that we had to do and it was time-consuming. When you watch the film, you’ll see the connections in it. Then there was Covid-19 too.”

Stree 2 is directed by Amar Kaushik under the banner of Jio Studios and Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films. The Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi starrer is scheduled to be released on August 15, on the occasion of India’s 77th Independence Day.
