Spin legend Bishan Singh Bedi no more: This film on cricket saw his first and only movie appearance
Despite his prolonged illness leading him to keep a low profile, the year 2023 marked a significant milestone for former Indian cricket team captain and veteran left-arm spinner Bishan Singh Bedi as it saw him making his first and only movie appearance.

Former Indian cricket team captain and veteran left-arm spinner Bishan Singh Bedi passed away on Monday at the age of 77. Bedi played 67 Tests for India and took 266 wickets, including 14 five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket haul.
Despite his prolonged illness leading him to keep a low profile, the year 2023 marked a significant milestone for the former cricketer as he made his first and only movie appearance in R Balki’s sports drama Ghoomer.
The film depicted the story of a young paraplegic cricketer named Anina (Saiyami Kher) and also featured Bedi’s son, Angad Bedi, in a pivotal role, with the legendary cricketer making a cameo appearance as himself, giving valuable advice to Anina.
Expressing his joy at the opportunity to share the screen with his father, Angad told news agency ANI in August, “This is a dream come true for me. To be in the same film and credit list of a film together my with father, who is not only a legendary cricketer but also an incredible human being, is an honour. Working alongside Saiyami and Abhishek has been a fantastic experience, and I can’t wait for the audience to witness the magic we have created together.”

The film also starred Abhishek Bachchan in a central role, with Amitabh Bachchan making a cameo appearance. Ghoomer had its world premiere as the opening film at the 14th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in August.
Bishan Singh Bedi was a part of Indian cricket’s golden quartet of spinners, along with Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chadrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan. Together, the quartet formed the core of India’s bowling unit for over a decade between 1966 and 1978.
