Sonnalli Seygall and her husband Ashesh L Sajnani welcomed their first child, a baby girl, on November 27, this year. The actor had shared the news on social media calling their daughter Shukar a ‘little miracle’. In her first ever interview after embracing motherhood, Sonnalli, who will soon be seen in the short film Zindagi Milegi Dobara, shares that the past few months have been very “hectic, but super fulfilling”.

In an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, the Pyaar Ka Punchnama actor describes motherhood as an overwhelming journey till now. “If I decide to take a shower at 8 am, I get the time to actually do it at 4 pm. But, I just look at her and it all feels worth it. I know it will keep getting better as she grows up,” she says.

Sonnalli adds, “I have sleepless nights. You can’t avoid it even though my baby is really calm and peaceful. She doesn’t really trouble me. I have to wake her up and feed her every two hours. That is something we can’t escape, but God gives you some sort of a power that your body just gets accustomed. I really feel that the last month of pregnancy prepares you for this, because you are anyway having sleepless night in the eighth and ninth month because of the frequent washroom breaks. By the time you have a baby in your hand, you are used to that routine anyway. So, I am awake the whole night. I only sleep for 2-3 hours, and then I wake up again. When I finally wake up in the morning, it doesn’t feel like a good morning, more like an extension of the night only.”

The 35-year-old also shares how she has transformed as a woman after embracing motherhood. “It is really nice to see the capability of a woman’s body and mind, and how much motherhood can push your limits, in a good way! You can see the difference and say, ‘Oh My God, I was really capable of this.’ The biggest change I have seen is that I am really able to put myself second, after someone. That’s pretty amazing,” she tells us.

The actor was quite active during her pregnancy and often shared her yoga and workout videos on Instagram. Sharing that it actually helped her, she says, “More than physically, your mind really benefits from it. I really feel that the impact that workout and yoga has on your mind, its the primary, the by-product is your body. I really feel that its so much easier to tackle postpartum depression. All mothers have postpartum blues; it is a real thing. But, if you really take care of yourself beforehand, it can be stopped from going to an acute level. You still can’t eliminate it completely,” adding, “It can be managed beautifully if you take care of yourself. By the second week after birth, I really had my handle over everything. When you are physically fit, you also recover faster and chances of having a normal delivery increase, which is what happened in my case and I am really grateful for that.”

Sonnalli Seygall is also trying to do everything independently as a new mom. “I am trying to be a hands on mother. I want to do everything myself. From changing diapers to massaging and bathing, I am doing everything myself. I haven’t kept any maalishwaali. I think its really important to do everything yourself and stay connected to the baby.”

Ask her about the plans to come back to work and she replies, “I am not back at work. This is the only close to work thing I am doing this week; only interviews on calls. I have thought about this and I feel every mother deserves maternity leaves and a much-needed break. I am the kind of person who picks up one thing and gets really invested in that and this is the most precious thing in my life ever. Right now, I am very consumed. I had two events for January, but I said no. For full time working and acting, I will take some time and I will think about it when I reach there. I am just really enjoying this phase right now.”

Talking about her upcoming release ZMD, set to premiere on Zee Cinema HD on Dec 20 at 7.30 pm, she chose the project due to its relevance. “I found the subject really fascinating and relevant. The film felt like the need of the hour. We talk about all sorts of addictions, be it drugs or alcohol, but I think digital addiction is something that is still very less talked about. Even as actors, we often find ourselves hooked to social media or just on our phones all the time. Personally, I try to do a digital detox from time to time. Also, I felt very connected to my character. Both of these reasons pushed me to take up this role,” she reflects. ZMD focuses on the impact of the digital age on personal relationships. Also starring Prachee Shah Paandya and Aarna Sharma, it is directed by Aarrav Jindal.
