Sarfarosh, which has gained a cult following over the years, recently celebrated 25 years of its release. While Aamir Khan was already a household name in the industry, the film acted as a turning point in Sonali Bendre’s life. Recalling the 25th anniversary of the film, Bendre spoke about finding the feeling surreal. She also opened up about Sarfarosh 2.

In an interview with India Today, Bendre was asked about how she plans to leave a legacy of her own in the industry. The actor replied, “I think a month or two months ago, we celebrated 25 years of Sarfarosh and every body was talking about it. It was so surreal. I was like who would have thought that we would be sitting here and talking about this.”

She added, “And suddenly it made me feel so old. Everybody was talking about ‘OMG! How did you do?’ and I was like, ‘I feel like I am still learning. What are you talking about?’ I think legacy is something someone else talks about and discusses. I genuinely don’t think you can plan and have a legacy.”

Sarfarosh, written and directed by John Matthew Matthan, starred Aamir Khan, Naseeruddin Shah and Sonali Bendre in the lead roles. The film took seven years for research, pre-production and production, finally releasing on April 30, 1999, just before the Kargil conflict when tension between India and Pakistan was high.

The Aamir Khan-starrer, which revolved around an Indian police officer’s quest to stop cross-border terrorism, opened to criticial acclaim and was a commercial success. It was also honoured with the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Later, it was remade in Kannada as Sathyameva Jayathe and in Telugu as Astram.

Just recently, on the film’s 25th anniversary, Aamir Khan talked about the possibility of Sarfarosh 2. The actor said, “”I’ve been telling John (director) for many years to make Sarfarosh 2. Also, the film ended in such a way that we could make part two of this film. I’ve told John that if he writes a good story, then we can make a Sarfarosh 2. This time he told me he was trying.”

He added, “I can commit one thing, that we’ll definitely give it a really serious shot now, coming up with the right script and the right kind of film for it (part two).”
