Everybody lied about Parveen Babi, said ‘woh paagal hai’: Shekhar Suman recalls interviewing troubled star, editing controversial portions out

Shekhar Suman interviewed Parveen Babi some years before her death in 2005, and recalled the moment he became uncomfortable during their chat.

Shekhar Suman spoke about interviewing the late Parveen Babi two decades ago for his chat show, Simply Shekhar. Clips from the conversation, during which the troubled actor spoke dismissively about Amitabh Bachchan, recently began doing the rounds again on social media. In a new interview, Shekhar said that he is aware of the renewed popularity of the interview, and proceeded to recall anecdotes about it.

With a laugh, he told Siddharth Kannan that the interview was quite memorable. It was one of the last times that Parveen Babi participated in such a chat, before she passed away in 2005. He said, “One day, I got a call, ‘Shekhar, this is Parveen Babi. You’re so good, dear. Can I be on your show’?” Shekhar was overjoyed, and they began making plans for the interview. But at the last minute, she said that she wouldn’t be able to make it to the studio, and requested Shekhar to conduct the interview at her house.”

He continued, “Everything they used to say about her, it was all lies. ‘Woh paagal ho chuki hain, ajeeb sa behave karti hain (She’s not in her right senses). She was normal. Although, midway through the interview, she started saying some things that made me uncomfortable. She started saying things that I didn’t want to hear about certain people. I didn’t stop her, but I edited them out later, because there was no proof for what she was saying, and it wouldn’t have been right to believe a one-sided narrative.”

In the viral clip from the interview, Parveen Babi asked why Amitabh had been declared the ‘Star of the Millennium’, over the likes of Marlon Brando, Lawrence Olivier and others. She also said that he isn’t very good-looking. Reacting to her comments, Shekhar said, “That’s what she said, but I didn’t try to ask her why she felt that way. She must’ve had her reasons.” Shekhar said that everything comes a full circle, and it makes sense that the Parveen Babi interview has found a new life on social media.
