Actor Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi starrer Masoom is getting a sequel. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has confirmed that he is directing the sequel to Masoom but has kept all the details under wraps.
The 1983 classic, written by Gulzar, marked the directorial debut of Kapur, who went on to helm films like Mr India and Bandit Queen. Masoom was an adaptation of the 1980 novel Man, Woman and Child by Erich Segal.
In an interview with ETimes, when asked about rumours of the Masoom sequel being in the works, Shekhar Kapur said, “I am directing a sequel to Masoom. But the details later. Let’s chat about it later on.”
The acclaimed film chronicled the story of a happily married couple, Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi, whose lives are altered after a boy, who is the son of the woman from his earlier affair, shows up. Masoom also starred Jugal Hansaraj, Urmila Matondkar and Supriya Pathak. The film is remembered for its brilliant performances, senstive storytelling and RD Burman’s timeless music, with songs like “Tujhse Naraz Nahin Zindagi” and “Lakdi Ki Kaathi”.
On the work front, Shekhar Kapur recently helmed the romantic comedy What’s Love Got to Do with It? starring Lily James, Shazad Latif, Shabana Azmi and Emma Thompson among others. Naseeruddin Shah, meanwhile, is currently seen on the second season of the ZEE5 series Taj.
