Sharmila Tagore feels content on TV is regressive: ‘Commerce often overrides logic’
Sharmila Tagore is not okay with the kind of stories and messages that are being presented on television shows.

Actor Sharmila Tagore, who was recently seen in the film Gulmohar, feels that the content shown on television is quite regressive. The actor spoke about the kind of shows which are being shown to the audience through the medium of the small screen and found the content problematic. The actor, who herself is a member of Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) said that most of the television shows present women as other women’s enemies and this is not right.
The 78-year-old actor also shared that the government does keep an eye on these shows and it is brought to the BCCC’s notice but despite telling the show-makers to change the content, nothing happens. She also revealed that they do tell show-makers to remove certain objectionable scenes from the show but in vain as “commerce often overrides logic”.
The actor has given some blockbuster films in the past like Aradhana, Amar Prem and Chupke Chupke. A superstar in the 1970s and 1980’s, the actor is seen less on the big screen nowadays.
Earlier, in an interview with India Today, Sharmila had shared that sometimes she did films only to pay the bills. “Well, we as professionals, sometimes we sign a film for money, just to pay the rent. Sometimes we help a colleague or somebody who thinks if I’m in the project, the project will do well. So I’ve made films for many reasons.” Tagore started working at a very young age and continued to work after she got married to Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi in 1968,” said the actor
Sharmila added, “I think, overall, I’ve done it for because I liked the script and, at that point of time, that it was necessary. But at this point of time, where I am today, Kusum was necessary.” Kusum is her character’s name in Gulmohar, which also starred Manoj Bajpayee.
