Shakti Kapoor recalls getting ragged by Mithun Chakraborty and seniors at FTII, reveals his hair was cut: ‘I started crying’
Shakti Kapoor said he regretted disrespecting Mithun Chakraborty even before his course had started at FTII, where the former was his senior.

Actor Shakti Kapoor has opened up about his ragging at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) done by his senior, actor Mithun Chakraborty and said the former was triggered at the “disrespect” given to him. Kapoor said he was already feeling like a “star” by the time he reached Pune to join FTII and recalled asking Chakraborty– with a certain attitude — if would like to have some beer on their first meeting.
In a video posted by DD Urdu’s YouTube channel for their show Guftgoo, Kapoor narrated how he left from Delhi to Mumbai and met a man on train, who was also going to FTII and became friends. They both got to know that there were still three days before the start of their course, so Kapoor decided to accompany him to his sister’s wedding and realised that she was getting married to actor Vinod Khanna’s brother, Pramod Khanna.
At the party, he felt like a star as he met Bollywood celebrities, including filmmaker Rakesh Roshan. The night before their academic year was beginning, Rakesh Roshan and Pramod Khanna decided to drop them to the institute, Kapoor recalled.
“By the time we reached Pune, I had beer in my hand and was feeling ecstatic that I have already become a star! We reached the hostel and I saw that there was a guy standing there, he was wearing a dhoti with so many holes that you can’t even count. He was dusky, had a solid built. He saw Rakesh Roshan and touched his feet. I had beer in my hand and asked him, ‘You want to have some beer?’ He refused and said it is anyway not allowed in the institute and then introduced himself– he was Mithun Chakraborty!”
The actor said once Rakesh Roshan and Pramod Khanna left, Mithun took him to his hostel room where other seniors joined him and cut his hair. They then took him to the pool and asked him to do laps.
“I thought my God, main toh phass gaya, gadbad hogayi hai. I was regretting what I did because it was wrong. After two lengths I was exhausted. I was anyway so tensed, I started crying, saying that I want to go back to Delhi, to my home, that I don’t want to be an actor, forgive me.”
Kapoor recalled how then Mithun Chakraborty came to his rescue and asked them to stop, so that they don’t push it too much. “He took me out of there and told me, ‘Next time, you should understand how to respect your seniors. Never repeat this.’ He took me to my room and locked it from outside. He said, ‘I am locking you so that people think you are not in the room, otherwise the entire night till morning you will be paraded,'” Kapoor added.
