Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who was recently seen on the web show Farzi, has opened up about moving from romantic and cute roles to more complex characters, to avoid becoming a cliché. In an interview with Etimes, Shahid said, “The desire to do something complex and challenging was always there, but I was not offered those roles earlier. You can only choose from the choices that are in front of you.” The actor expressed a preference for playing complex and flawed characters as opposed to cute characters, which he finds boring. Shahid, who made his acting debut with the film Ishq Vishk in 2003, went on to star in several romantic comedies such as Vivah, Jab We Met, and Milenge Milenge, where he portrayed the role of a cute and lovable hero. The actor also revealed his dad Pankaj Kapur’s advice and said, “My dad once told me, ‘Beta, abhi tum kar lo yeh sab – cute boy, romantic and all, par jis din tum acting karna shuru kar doge na, tab aisa lagega ki sher ke muh mein khoon lag gaya hai, phir tumhe baar baar waise hi kirdaar karne ka mann karega.’ Shahid Kapoor said that after working for 20 years, he finally understood what his father meant. The actor shared that he is happy about exploring diverse genres. However, Shahid added, “I won’t be doing only complex roles. I have to do different things. If I keep repeating myself in that zone, it will become cliché. The idea is not to become a cliché, and that is what I intend to do – keep changing every time.”
