Shahid Kapoor says actors who indulge in self-promotion are going against ‘Hindustani culture’
In a recent interview, Shahid Kapoor spoke about how his silent ambition is unusual at a time when several film industry personalities can't stop promoting themselves.

Actor Shahid Kapoor believes in ‘quiet ambition’ and letting his work do all the talking. However, he’s amused at how certain people just can’t stop speaking highly about themselves. Citing the example of how cricketer Sachin Tendulkar relied on his bat to do the talking, he said that he doesn’t believe in self-promotion.
The Farzi actor was in conversation with Film Companion, where he was asked about being ‘quietly ambitious’. The actor said that he may come across as old-school, but that’s the mindset he’s grown up with. “Everyone is promoting themselves. I don’t know, I find that a little odd. How can you praise yourself? I have not been brought up like that,” he said, adding that attention-seeking behaviour has increased in the last decade.
Dismissing the trend as being against Indian culture, he said, “Yeh Hindustani culture nahi hai. I have seen it in other cultures [We believe in ] Kaam karo, chup raho (do your work quietly), stay humble and respect seniors regardless of where you come from. That’s our kind of thinking,” Shahid Kapoor said. “You need to talk about it loudly,” he laughed.
Shahid added that people rightly point out that stars are no longer enigmatic. “People say they are too accessible. I was feeling that for 10 years but no one was [talking about it],” he said, adding that there is no exclusivity and that it is important to leave certain things to the audience’s imagination.
He also opened up about social media, and how he doesn’t like to share everything about his life, and would want his children to lead a normal childhood.
Shahid Kapoor on keeping kids Misha and Zain away from limelight
Shahid Kapoor is married to Mira Rajput and they have two children — daughter Misha and a son Zain. Recently, the family moved to the town side of Mumbai to safeguard his kids’ privacy. He shared in an interview with indianexpress.com, “We really liked the place. It just felt right and of course, it’s good for the kids. We have been living in a small house for a long time and needed a slightly bigger place. Also, the house has been in the making for three-four years, as it got delayed because of Covid. Finally, we got it done and we are happy to be where we are now.”

Asked if he has consciously taken the decision to keep his kids away from the limelight, he said, “Honestly, as a parent, it’s my duty to give my children as normal a lifestyle as possible. I cannot change certain things, of course, but I will do whatever little things that take them closer to that. It is only fair. After you become an actor, you do realise later that mere wajah se itne problems horahe hai. I will give them as much normalcy as possible. I personally too crave normalcy. I think there’s great value in simple things in life, it just makes you feel.. just so normal.”
The proud father of two also shared how his kids are now coming to realise that he’s an actor. He shared. “Bade ho rahe hai toh abhi pata chal raha hai (Now that they are growing up, they are starting to understand it). That’s just the way it is and I think it had to happen some day,” he said.
