Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham managed to bring together the biggest stars of Hindi cinema but getting them all together on the set at the same time wasn’t the easiest task. In a recent interview, director Nikhil Advani, who was an assistant director on the film, recalled his memories of shooting the song “Bole Chudiyan” with Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan. Nikhil shared that on days when the six of them would be required on the set at the same time, they would all wait for the other one to reach the set before them.
Talking to Filmfare, Nikhil shared that there were seven make up vans on the set when they were shooting the part of the song that required all the actors but none of them was coming on to the set. “We are shooting the sequence where all of them are there and wondering why no one is coming. The set was lit up like it’s Diwali,” he shared.
Nikhil Advani then recalled walking from one vanity van to another asking the actors to report on set, but all of them just kept asking if the others had reached. “I went and I told Kajol that shot is ready, she asked, ‘Has Shah Rukh come?’ I said no. She says, ‘Tell him to come, then I will come.’ I go to Shah Rukh, he asks, ‘Has Hrithik come? Tell him to come, then I’ll come.’ I go to Hrithik, he asks, ‘Has Bebo come? Tell her to come and then I will.’ I go to Jaya ji, she asks, ‘Has the old man come? No.’ So nobody has come,” he recalled.
Nikhil said that he along with the other ADs on set then placed themselves outside all the vanity vans so they could all come out at the same time. “I said ‘Jaya ji, I am standing outside your van and I am putting six other ADs outside other vans. We are on a walkie, you step out, I promise you everyone will step out. That’s how we did it,” he shared and added, “And Karan had fainted. He is shouting on the walkie, looking at the monitor.”
Nikhil said that the problems only lasted until they were out of the vans, and from then on, it was smooth sailing. “They are stars, they have tantrums but once they are there, they would be like ‘You are looking so lovely.’ All of this used to happen. It was madness. Jaya ji and Kajol would talk in Bangla. Amit ji would be sitting there. It was crazy,” he shared.
Nikhil Advani then went on to direct Kal Ho Naa Ho under Dharma Productions. He recently released his SonyLIV series Freedom At Midnight.
