Aryan Khan’s much-anticipated directorial debut, The Ba***ds of Bollywood, is finally streaming. True to expectations, the series is packed with cameos from some of the biggest names in the film industry, practically anyone you can think of shows up at some point. No one is spared, not even Sameer Wankhede (lookalike), the former NCB officer. Naturally, Shah Rukh Khan makes an appearance as well. Staying true to his public persona, his scenes are laced with self-deprecating humour and sharp wit.

He makes his first appearance in the sixth episode, where we see him trying to meet Manoj Pahwa’s Avtar, who is enjoying his new found success. Shah Rukh, playing himself, wants to meet and congratulate him. However, things don’t go as planned. When Shah Rukh sends an assistant to Avtar’s vanity van with the message, “Baadshah wants to see you,” Avtar mistakes it as a request from rapper Badshah, whom he has a history with, and dislikes, and thus, he declines the offer.

When the assistant informs Shah Rukh of the rejection, the superstar reacts with disbelief and comic anger, even attempting to attack the assistant in frustration. The self-mockery continues when he later runs into Jaraj Saxena (played by Rajat Bedi), a washed-up actor who humiliates him further by asking, “Shah Rukh, right?” Shah Rukh struggles to keep his cool but refrains from a physical outburst.

One of the more poignant moments comes later in the series when Shah Rukh appears on stage at an award show. With his trademark humour, he says, “Like every year, I have not been nominated in the Best Actor category.” He follows it up with, “But it’s okay, I’ll manage with the 400 awards I have at home.” In a touching meta-moment, he presents the debut trophy to Aasmaan (Lakshya). Just like Shah Rukh had once dedicated his first Filmfare award to his late mother, Lakshya dedicates his win to his late father. He closes the moment with a nostalgic nod, quoting the iconic line from Om Shanti Om; a call-back that fans will immediately recognize.

The Ba***ds of Bollywood is created and directed by Aryan Khan and produced by Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan under Red Chillies Entertainment. The show stars Lakshya Lalwani, Sahher Bambba, Bobby Deol, and Raghav Juyal in lead roles.
