Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, whose family sold off ancestral land to fund his first film, Arjun Reddy, spoke about showing his latest movie to his wife and his son. He said in a new interview that his wife had no complains about how the female characters in the movie were treated, but she did recoil at the bloodshed. He also revealed that he showed his seven-year-old son an edited version of the movie, and that his brother doesn’t mince words when it comes to feedback.

Chatting with Siddharth Kannan, Vanga said that his son, whom he has named Arjun Reddy after the protagonist of his first film, doesn’t quite understand the concept of ‘hits’ and ‘superhits’, but is aware of Animal, and even has a favourite scene. “What we did was, we removed all the scenes he shouldn’t be watching, put a new edit on a hard disk, and showed that to him. This was during New Year’s in Goa. He saw the film, but I’ve chopped all the A-rated scenes,” Vanga said.

He continued with a laugh, “He said that the underwear action scene was very funny.” Asked if his wife also gives him tough feedback like his brother Pranay, and if she has ‘ideological battles’ with him, Vanga said, “Yes, it happens. I get genuine feedback at home. She felt that there was a lot of bloodshed. She didn’t say anything about misogyny and all.”

In an earlier interview, Vanga’s brother recalled the difficulty he faced in getting Arjun Reddy financed independently, and how the family contributed. Animal actor Siddhant Karnick also recalled this story, and told Kannan, “His brother was telling me, when he started his filmmaking career assisting people, he wasn’t getting jobs as a director. He finally formed a company with friends, and just a month before (filming), his financiers backed out. He was Rs 1.6 crore short. His family got together and sold their ancestral land, 36 acres of mango farmland was sold to fund his movie.”

Despite facing harsh criticism, Animal emerged as a massive hit, grossing over Rs 900 crore worldwide. The movie recently dropped on Netflix, where it set viewership records for Indian films.
