Actor Samir Soni recently shared his two cents about the ongoing debate on rising star fees and entourage costs in Bollywood. The actor, who was last seen in Amazon Prime Video’s Made in Heaven, responded to filmmakers Farah Khan and Karan Johar’s comments on rising entourage costs at a time when Bollywood films are not generating enough revenue and returns.

Soni, when asked about his take on filmmakers criticising actors for charging a bomb to act in movies, told Ujjwal Trivedi, “All I’d like to say to Karan and Farah is that if you think the expenses are rising, you are the ones who is paying for all of it. You can’t be signing a big star for Rs 100 crore and then say that these guys take a lot of money. Kuch kami toh aap mein bhi hai (There are some shortcomings in you, too). Because otherwise, there are people who will work for Rs 1 crore also and for Rs 50 lakh also. You’ve done this!”

Karan Johar had recently spoken about the exorbitant fees charged by top actors. Farah Khan had also commented on the rising overhead costs of making films, which are directly linked to outrageous demands of stars. She had called it “wastage of resources”. An Indianexpress.com report had shed light on the menace of entourage cost, which are inflating budgets and risking a film’s recovery. The price breakup for the entourage of a star varies, but on average, a spot boy would charge Rs 25,000 per day, personal security would charge Rs 15,000 per head per day and a stylist can charge up to Rs 1 lakh. The overhead cost of a star amounts to Rs 20-22 lakh per day, which for a film shot over 70 days, would be additional cost of Rs 15-20 crore.

Before Samir Soni, actor Rajeev Khandelwal too had slammed Karan and Farah on their comments and had shared his observations. Asked about Karan Johar’s recent comments about certain actors who charge Rs 35 crore but struggle to deliver Rs 3.5 crore openings, Rajeev told Siddharth Kanan, in an interview, “But who agreed to give them the Rs 35 crore in the first place? If not Rs 35 crore, someone must’ve given them Rs 30 crore. Was it you yourself who used to give them Rs 25 crore? Till the time when Rs 25 crore was working for you, it was fine, but now that it’s not, you’re coming out and complaining about high salaries. Who spoiled them? You created these monsters.”
