When Saif Ali Khan was gifted a diamond-studded Rolex by Sultan of Brunei, tried to sell it to Ramesh Taurani
Saif Ali Khan recalled a story about attending a meet and greet with the Sultan of Brunei's daughter, who was a big Bollywood fan.

Because of the unusual promotional strategies being implemented for the upcoming mythological film Adipurush, the cast and director aren’t interacting with the press individually. But more surprisingly, Saif Ali Khan hasn’t participated in the publicity drive at all, despite playing the film’s villain. Over the years, Saif has proven himself to be a uniquely carefree interviewee, someone who often lands himself in a soup for his comments. He generated controversy around Adipurush, when he said several months ago that the film would humanise Ravana.
But to fill the Saif-shaped void that his fans must be dealing with currently, now that the movie is a day away from release, it’s the perfect time to revisit one of his most entertaining stories. In an interview with East India Comedy some years ago, Saif recalled a story about attending a high-profile meet and greet organised by the Sultan of Brunei, whose daughter was a big Bollywood fan, and walking out with a rather expensive gift.
He said, “I remember, the Sultan of Brunei — hopefully he won’t have me executed — used to have these things where you’d come and get to see him. He used to get Michael Jackson also to sing, he’s a really rich guy. His daughter was really into Bollywood, and I remember once, he had called us. It was me, Manisha Koirala, and various other people at the Dorchester Hotel in London.”
Saif remembered that there was a ‘big chair and a little chair’, and he went and sat in the big chair, but was told that it was reserved for the Sultan’s daughter. They got a picture taken, and Saif was handed a box before he left. “I opened the box, and it was this diamond Rolex. I’ve given it to my wife now, because it’s just really effeminate, unfortunately. But great gold watch with diamonds everywhere. I tried selling it to Ramesh Taurani, I was like, ‘Sir, it’s so you’.”
Saif has worked with Taurani on the Race movies. Recently, his daughter worked with Taurani on the Disney+ Hotstar film Gaslight. Adipurush will be released in theatres on Friday.
