In recent months, Infosys chairperson Sudha Murthy’s stories about being underestimated in the West because of how simply she dresses have been widely shared online. But did you know that Sadhguru, another local celebrity who has become hugely popular overseas, has also experienced something similar? In a conversation with actor Juhi Chawla nearly a decade ago, he said that he’s often stopped at immigration lines and asked if he understands English.

During the interaction, which has been shared in full on YouTube, Juhi Chawla asked Sadhguru if he had a regular childhood, and if he went to a regular school like everybody else. “How was it when you were a child? Were you put into a school, to go the systematic way?” she asked.

Sadhguru replied, “Do I look that educated? Don’t insult me like that. Actually, when I go and stand in immigration lines, particularly in America, they look at me and say, ‘Can you speak English?’ I say (nods). Because I have that uneducated look, it’s not easy. Do you know what it takes to remain uneducated?”

He continued, “Education is just 20 years of going somewhere and getting a certificate. To remain uneducated, it’s very difficult. Because from the day you’re born, your parents, every adult, everybody is trying to educate you about something that hasn’t worked in their life.”

Recently, Sudha Murthy has also narrated several similar anecdotes. In an appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show, she recalled how she was called a ‘cattle class person’ on an international flight, even though she had a business class ticket. This happened, she said, because she was wearing a salwar kameez. On the same show, she recalled how the UK immigration authorities refused to believe her when she said that she is the mother-in-law of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. “He thought I was joking. No one believes that I, a 72 year old, simple lady, can be the mother-in-law of the Prime Minister,” she said on the show.
