Actor Ridhi Dogra, who drew attention with her performance as Shah Rukh Khan’s Amma in Atlee’s superhit Jawan, has been a popular face on Indian television. She started her acting journey on television in 2007. But her list of work on television steers clear of typical saas-bahu dramas. During her time on TV, she made sure she didn’t do anything on-screen that sent out a wrong message to the masses, one of which was not throwing acid on the ‘heroine’ of her show.

In a latest interview with Hauterfly, Ridhi shared that when she was playing a negative character in a show, she was required to throw acid on the ‘heroine’. But she put her foot down and refused to do the scene. She opposed it as it would have sent a wrong message to the viewers of the show.

Ridhi narrated, “There was a show in which I was playing a negative character. I refused 50 things that they wanted me to do. They told me that my character would throw acid on the heroine. I had a big fight with the whole channel. I said, ‘I won’t shoot it. This thing will be aired at the primetime and why would you want to put the idea in the head of a guy who is irritated with a girl?'”

But, her refusing to do the scene was presumed to be merely an excuse to not look bad on the screen. Ridhi added, “But then it was the same conversation, ‘Oh, she doesn’t want to look bad, she wants to be a heroine.’ I said I can do 50 things to look bad, but I won’t do this and won’t even let you did this.”

Indian television is often deemed regressive. Ridhi was also often questioned about her choice of being a part of the television industry. But she debated, “One, I am making great money and secondly, being here and being able to change something, is a bigger high.” And, when she couldn’t change much about the medium, she made sure her characters do not do certain typical things, like not sleeping while being all decked up in jewellery and saree.

After Jawan, Ridhi recently appeared in the Prime Video series, Mumbai Diaries 2. Next, she will be seen in Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif’s Tiger 3.
