Rhea Chakraborty says she was prepared to go to jail during public trial after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death: ‘Many people were after me…’
Recently, Rhea Chakraborty spoke about the 'mental and physical trauma' she went through in the jail. She recalled her schedule in the jail, which involved having dinner at 2 pm.

Actor Rhea Chakraborty spent 28 days in the Byculla jail after the death of her actor-boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput. She was accused of procuring drugs for the late actor and was later released on bail. Recently, she spoke about the ‘mental and physical trauma’ she went through in the jail. She recalled her schedule in the jail, which involved having dinner at 2 pm.
During a recent interaction with Chetan Bhagat on his chat show, Deep Talk With Chetan Bhagat, Rhea shared that after being “chased” by so many people after Sushant’s death, she wanted justice and if that meant going to jail, she was fine with it. She said, “It had become a show and my life was on display. I was like, stop it. I thought, ye ho hi jaaye toh better hai (let it happen). Let me go to jail. So many people were after me, that existence was not okay for me. I preferred everything gets clarified, even if that means going to jail.”
In 2020, when Rhea got arrested, the world was grappling with coronavirus. Hence, she had to spend 14 days in confinement, away from other jail inmates. The Chehre actor recalled, “Due to COVID rules, I had to be in solitary confinement for 14 days. I was the only one in the room. I was asked if I’d like to have lunch. I was so hungry and tired that I ate whatever was given to me.” The actor was served a roti and capsicum which was nothing more than “capsicum in water.” The actor also shared that she slept for 12 straight hours as she was so tired of whatever was happening to her.
“People inside are much better than people outside because there is no societal structure in jail. It’s a different world. I started feeling grateful when I saw that many prisoners don’t have family support. Or they don’t have Rs. 5,000 or Rs. 10,000 for their bail. At least, I have my family and friends. I told myself, ‘You will get justice. You will get bail. You have not done anything wrong. I have so much to learn from these women while I am here. Why am I wasting my time sulking about what is not in my control?’” shared Rhea.
She further revealed that the toilets in the jail were so dirty but her ‘mental trauma’ overpowered the ‘physical trauma’. Rhea added, “Mental trauma is so much harder that the physical trauma starts paling in front of it. You think ‘Ganda bathroom toh manage kar lungi’ (I will manage the dirty bathroom).”
Besides the dirty bathrooms, Rhea talked about the schedule in the jail and how she got Rs 5000 money order from home to eat at the canteen. She shared, “You get breakfast at 6 a.m., lunch at 11 a.m., and dinner at 2 p.m. because it goes with the British way of things. They open the gates at 6 a.m. and lock you in at 5 p.m. Until then, you can take a shower, go to the library, etc. Most people save their dinner and have it at 7-8 p.m. However, I changed my whole cycle. Yeh khana toh waise bhi khaya nahin jaayega. Garam hoga toh fir bhi khaya jaayega. Thanda toh bilkul nahin khaya jaayega. (The food was still edible when warm, so I preferred eating it warm). Hence, I started waking up at 4 a.m. and finishing my dinner at 2 p.m.,” she shared.
Rhea was put on media trial when Sushant Singh Rajput died in 2020. Her case is still sub-judice.
