It was in the June of 2020, while the world was dealing with the first wave of the pandemic, Rhea Chakraborty was blamed for the alleged suicide of her partner, Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. While the narrative at the time made Rhea look like a vamp who was taking advantage of the actor, she stood her ground even after she was thrown in jail for six weeks on the charges of procuring drugs for the late actor. Three years later, Rhea, who does not given many interviews, spoke at the India Today Conclave and shared that people are not ready to accept that one could be depressed despite being rich and famous.
When asked if she knows the truth about Sushant’s alleged suicide, Rhea said, “The truth is that mental health is not understood in this country at all. We are taking strides and the youth is now talking about it and India is moving forward in understanding mental health. But when someone who is famous has a mental health condition, people don’t understand it. They are like he has fame, he has success, why is he depressed?”
Rhea added that people have a hard time accepting this because we are taught to work towards fame and money and when people see someone who has both and is depressed, they question “what am I working towards? That’s what doesn’t sit well with people.” She added that while the society is changing slowly but said that it is “very difficult for people to consume or digest the fact that someone who is rich and famous and successful could be mentally affected, could be depressed.”
Rhea then addressed Sushant’s mental health issues and acknowledged that she was well aware of his condition. When asked if she knew the reason as to what pushed him towards suicide, she said, “I could never know the truth of what took him to do what he did because I don’t live in his mind, contrary to popular belief. But I do know the truth about him being mentally ill, I do know the truth about what he was going through.” She added that the agencies are still working on his case and they will give their verdict.
Rhea was blamed for Sushant’s death, which she now explained as patriarchal conditioning. “They said that ever since she came into his life, he changed. He had his own identity before me. He was a guy who came from a small town. He made it so big in Bollywood. That is not a mind that can be controlled.”
Sushant Singh Rajput passed away in June 2020 at his residence in Mumbai.
