While director Vikramaditya Motwane has contributed some of Hindi cinema’s most beloved recent films and series, his 2013 period romantic drama Lootera, starring Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh in the lead roles, remains a personal favourite for many cinephiles. Based on O Henry’s short story The Last Leaf, the film is set in the 1950s and revolves around a complex yet endearing romantic relationship between a wealthy young woman and a conman.

Motwane recently discussed his experience of collaborating with Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha in the film, elaborating on their working styles. Mentioning that Ranveer is a “fourth or fifth take” actor who gradually immerses himself in the character or the moment, Motwane said Sonakshi, in contrast, is a “second-take actor”. “She will do the first take, and then you tell her what you want in the second take, and she’s bang-on in the second one,” he told Film Companion.

When the interviewer asked him how he strikes a balance while working with actors whose best performances come in different takes, Motwane replied that you have to plan accordingly. “You have to break down your shots accordingly. I will start with the second-take actor and then move on to the other actor, who will have warmed up by then by doing off-takes for the first actor,” he added.

According to Motwane, actor Ram Kapoor, with whom he has collaborated in the movie Udaan and the series Jubilee, is a first-take actor. “You have to mentally prepare him, convey what you want, and then let him take flight with it,” he said. “Sidhant Gupta is more of a third or fourth-take guy, while Aparshakti Khurana is a second-take guy. With Aparshakti, you give him directions after the first take, and he’ll nail it,” Motwane observed about his two other Jubilee stars.
