Rani Mukerji had to be carried to her car because she’d ‘frozen’ while filming KANK song in -14 degrees; Karan Johar admits he was ‘crazy’
Rani Mukerji reacted to Karan Johar's concern for Alia Bhatt during harsh shooting conditions, and pointed out that he didn't show the same concern for her.

In a recent roundtable appearance, filmmaker Karan Johar said that he was advised against the ‘Tum Kya Mile’ song from his latest film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, because many felt that it would look archaic in an otherwise feminist film. He said that he had a talk about it with Alia Bhatt, who’d be required to freeze in sub-zero temperatures wearing a chiffon saree. This prompted actor Rani Mukerji, who was also a part of the panel, to recall how inconsiderate Karan was to her when she was shooting a similar song in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.
Karan said, “I had a chat with Alia, and I said, ‘Listen, a lot of this is going to be difficult for you’. And she said, ‘But I’m dying to wear the chiffon saree, ask me first.'” Rani interjected, “They’re so lucky that they’re being asked, in our time nobody asked us if we’re feeling cold. ‘Pehno saree, perform karo’.” Karan recalled the shoot for the song ‘Tumhi Dekho Naa’, from the film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and said, “I was so crazy at that time, in -14 degrees, I said I want rain. So, there was a rain machine, but before it was reaching them, it was becoming ice. We had a health and safety department saying, ‘You’ll kill them’.”
Rani continued, “I was wearing a red saree in that song, and I actually froze. I couldn’t walk. And one of my cousins, who was also AD-ing him, Ayan, he had to literally carry me to my car, because I had frozen… If you see the song, in the lip-sync, my lips are frozen. I’m trying to sing it, and it looks sensuous, but it’s not sensuous actually.” Karan joked that another time, when they were shooting in -13 temperature, Rani was supposed to say the word ‘garden’, but she couldn’t say it correctly because it was so cold. “I can’t tell you what it was coming out as,” Karan said.
Released last year, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani was Karan’s first feature film as director in over seven years. Starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, the film emerged as a critical and commercial hit, grossing over Rs 350 crore worldwide. In a media interaction prior to the film’s release, Alia thanked the crew for taking care of her during the challenging shoot for the song, which took place just three months after she’d given birth. “You don’t see the heaters around, the leg warmers I had on, and how Ranveer, who was wearing jackets, would keep putting them on me in-between takes to provide some respite. But I must praise myself a bit, I am a trooper in that sense. I go with the flow and I am always focused on getting the job done. Wearing a puffer jacket over that chiffon saree would have taken away the beauty, so I was happy doing it as I got to live my dream,” she said.
