Ranbir Kapoor returned to the screens in 2022 with his big screen extravaganza Shamshera, which failed to deliver at the box office. In a recent virtual interaction, one of Ranbir's fans said that she really liked Shamshera and upon hearing this, Ranbir laughed and commented, "If you liked Shamshera, then you are a blind fan." When the fan elaborated and said that she "liked the concept", she also added that the film would have been a big hit if it had released in the 1990s. Ranbir chimed in an said, "The story of Shamshera was a little dated. It felt like you have seen this before, there wasn't any newness to it." He also added, "It didn't work. Audience is the king. If they didn't like it, they are right." Shamshera also starred Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor in significant roles and was directed by Karan Malhotra. Karan took to social media after the film failed to deliver at the box office and spoke about the "hate and rage" that came his way. "Will face everything together, the good, the bad and the ugly," he wrote as he stood by the film even after it bombed. Dutt, who played the antagonist in the film, also shared a note on social media and defended the film. A part of his note read, "Shamshera found a lot of people hating on it; some of the hate came from people who didn’t even watch it. I find it horrible that people don’t respect the hard work we all put in." In an earlier interview with indianexpress.com, Ranbir shared that part of the reason he chose Shamshera was because it "was catering to a larger audience." Shamshera only managed to collected Rs 42.48 crore at the box office.
