‘North will puke on Pushpa guy’s face’: Ram Gopal Varma reveals what a big producer said, jokes, ‘He must be having nightmares now’
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma said that Hindi filmmakers don't have the required skillset to make something like Pushpa 2, which recently made nearly Rs 2000 crore worldwide.

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma spoke about the state of the Indian film industry, and the rise of the ‘pan-India’ phenomenon. He also recalled the harsh comments made by a prominent film producer about the first Pushpa film, starring Allu Arjun. “He must be having nightmares now,” RGV said, making a reference about the massive success of both Pushpa: The Rise, and Pushpa 2: The Rule. In an interview, the filmmaker said that it would be impossible for a Hindi filmmaker to replicate the Pushpa films, because their sensibilities aren’t suited to the subject matter.
Speaking to Pinkvilla, RGV said that Hindi filmmakers are restricted to the Bandra area. “Most of the South directors, I’m not going to take names, they can’t even speak English. They’re very basic; very rooted and connected. They will not talk intellectually. They are more connected to the mass audience, which, I think, is impossible for a Bollywood director to do,” he said.
RGV said that nobody can make a movie like Pushpa 2 in Bollywood, not because they aren’t capable, but because ‘they don’t think like that’. Narrating a story about what a prominent film producer said, RGV continued, “When he saw Pushpa 1, he told someone I know, ‘North audience will puke on this guy’s face’. I don’t think it has anything to do with money, it has to do with the character. (The producer) likes a guy with a six-pack, super good-looking… He must be having nightmares now, after Pushpa 1 and 2.”
RGV said that there is a ‘sensibility difference’ in Bollywood, and it has nothing to do with the audience, because people will watch films from any corner of the country if they’re well-made. RGV continued, “Stars should always play stars; they shouldn’t play characters. If they change, you will disconnect. Even if you change, you should cater to the same emotion… In Bollywood, there is too much emphasis on the story. South directors only look at scenes, they don’t care about story. A big actor once told me, ‘I never listen to the story, my only question is, ‘Mera entry kya hai?'”
The two Pushpa movies have emerged as major box office successes. They’ve made a combined total of over Rs 2000 crore worldwide, with Pushpa 2 recently overtaking Baahubali 2: The Conclusion to become the second-biggest Indian film of all time.
