Rajkummar Rao takes a dig at Janhvi Kapoor as she jokes about ‘nepotism’: ‘Is that a taunt to me?’
As Janhvi Kapoor joked about nepotism, Rajkummar Rao made a statement that came across like he was taunting her.

Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao are presently promoting their upcoming film Mr and Mrs Mahi and during a recent interview, Janhvi joked about the privileges that she has always received due to her family background. But when Rajkuumar doubled down on the joke, Janhvi asked if he was taunting her.
The conversation around nepotism started as Janhvi was recalling a story from her childhood when she participated in her school choir. Janhvi said that because she couldn’t sing well, the mic in front of her in the choir was switched off. “The mic in front of my face was switched off intentionally. The woman said ‘Janhvi ke saamne vale mic ko off karo (Switch off the mic in front of Janhvi.)’,” she recalled in a chat with Mirchi Plus.
As Rajkummar and the interviewer wondered why they would do this to a child, he said, “Rakha kyu bechari ko fir? Mana kar dete (Why did they keep her in the choir? Could have said no).” Just then, Janhvi jokingly said, “Nepotism, of course. Isliye toh rakha tha mujhe choir mein (That’s why they kept me in the choir).”
As soon as Janhvi spoke about nepotism, Rajkummar said, “Fir toh theek hai. Fir toh kaash zindagi mein bhi hum bahut saare mics off kar pate (Then it’s okay. Then I wish we had the ability to switch off many other mics).” Janhvi was shocked with Rajkummar’s remark and immediately turned to him and asked, “Is that a taunt to me?” Rajkummar clarified that this wasn’t meant for her and reminded her that this was their second film together after 2022’s Roohi. Janhvi Kapoor is the daughter of late actor Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor. Rajkummar Rao does not come from a film family.

A few years ago, Rajkummar appeared on an interview with Sonam Kapoor where the two spoke about nepotism. The video of this conversation is often circulated on social media. Here, Sonam said that it took her five years to get her first film and mentioned that she was keen on assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali but her father Anil Kapoor insisted that she should assist Vidhu Vinod Chopra as they were friends. It was at this point that Rajkummar reminded her of her privilege that she had someone in her house who could just call directors when they wanted as opposed to the many outsiders who don’t even know where to start their journey in the movies.
