R Madhavan believes married star couples don’t have any chemistry on screen: ‘It might work if they are separated or broken up’
Actor R Madhavan talks about the kind of chemistry that is required in a romantic narrative and argues that married couples lack the ability to portray that.

Ahead of the release of their upcoming Netflix film Aap Jaisa Koi, actors R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh are making the rounds of the press trying to promote their film. During one such interview, Madhavan and Fatima shed some light on romantic narratives in general, and the actors gave their two cents about what they think is required for a successful film of this particular genre.
While talking to India Today, Madhavan broke down what he thought were the key ingredients of a romantic scene and put the chemistry between the actors right on top of that list. Madhavan argued that the desire for the person in front of you needs to be very visible, and according to him, married couples fail to bring that to the table. “You really have to feel the desire for the person in front of you, or else the scene just seems untrue. I might cause some controversy, but married stars are never able to create that on the screen. When you are already together, that kind of chemistry just doesn’t translate on the screen. If they are separated or not together anymore, it might work.”
Fatima also asked about the genre and her character in the film, who is involved with an older man. She defended the script and said that the story is just emulating what is happening in the real world. “I don’t think that it is unrealistic; I think cinema reflects whatever is happening in our society right now, and these kinds of conversations are already happening out there.” R Madhavan added that even though the characters in the film have an age gap, these kinds of pairings have been under a lot of fire lately. “At this point, there is a bigger demand for more narratives where the couple are closer to each other in age. Most of the actors my age are slowly realising that they can’t keep getting away with pretending to be the same age as their co-star,” said Madhavan.
The pairing and its chemistry will be tested come July 11 when the film releases on Netflix for audiences worldwide. Directed by Vivek Soni, the cast of the film includes Madhavan, Fatima, Sachin Kavetham, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Manish Chaudhari, Namit Das and more. The story has been penned by Radhika Anand and Jehan Handa.
