Actor Priyanka Chopra has often spoken about spending her teenage years in the US, with her aunt and uncle, but in an old interview with Anupam Kher, she said that she was sent away for three years in a hostel before that. Priyanka said that she wasn't an easy child, and as 'punishment', her parents decided to send her away. In an appearance on The Anupam Kher Show, Priyanka said that her parents barely met her till she was five years old, because they were busy working on their PhDs. She was mostly raised by relatives, including her maternal grandparents, and her aunt and uncle. "I was a stubborn child. I loved the word 'no' a lot. My mother would tell me to eat, and I'd say no. So, she started using reverse psychology with me," Priyanka recalled. Asked what kick she got out of saying no, Priyanka said, "It was just rebellion. I felt powerful. So, they sent me to hostel in the third standard, as punishment. La Martinière in Lucknow, third, fourth, fifth. Main kaafi sudhar ke wapas aayi (I returned a better person)." She admitted that she was spoiled before that. "I was the first girl child in my family, on both my father and mother's side. I was so spoiled, and I still am." Priyanka also spoke about why she decided to return to India after spending a few years in the US. She said that while people talk about racism against Black people, not enough people talk about racism against South Asians. She said that in high school, she was targeted by a bunch of girls, who happened to be Black. "They would tell me to go home and make curry, write things on my locker. We got into physical fights as well. It affects your confidence, I would try and reach school early to avoid meeting those girls, I would leave late. Finally, my mom came to visit me, and I said I want to return home, I want to feel like I belong." Shortly after her return, Priyanka applied to the Miss India pageant, ended up winning Miss World, and then embarked on an acting career that has taken her to Hollywood.
