Earlier this week, Priyanka Chopra seemed to confirm what many already believed about her decision to step away from Bollywood, when she said in a podcast that she was tired of the politics in the Hindi film industry, and suggested that she had been blacklisted by certain powerful people. A year ago, her manager Anjula Acharia had made similar suggestions in an interview.

Speaking with Forbes, Anjula said that there was a lot of ‘negativity’ surrounding Priyanka when they started working together, and the majority of it came from India. Anjula revealed that important film industry people warned her not to work with Priyanka, and told her, “She is never going to work, I don’t know why you are wasting your time.”

Anjula said, “I was at this dinner at a friend’s house in New York, with some prominent people from… I wouldn’t say Bollywood, because they hate that word, so the Hindi film industry, and they were just so negative about her. They were like, ‘She’s never going to work, I don’t know why you’re wasting your time, blah, blah, blah’.” Anjula said that she was hurt by the comments. She continued, “I remember being like, ‘Am I wasting my time?’. But this is where your self-belief comes in. It seemed like a crazy dream; right, to bring somebody from India to Hollywood? But I got to tell you when I look in Priyanka’s eyes, I just believe. Priyanka is just undeniable, she is a disruptor.”

The interview is once again being recirculated online after Priyanka’s recent comments about having ‘beef’ with people in Bollywood. She said on Dax Sheperd’s Armchair Expert podcast, “I was being pushed into a corner in the industry (Bollywood). I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that game so I kind of was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break.”

Anjula initially planned to launch Priyanka in the US as a singer, but when that strategy didn’t work out, Priyanka landed a role in the television show Quantico. She is now a reputed figure in Hollywood, having appeared in films such as The Matrix Revolutions, Baywatch and The White Tiger. She will soon star in the big-budget series Citadel, executive produced by Joe and Anthony Russo.
