Veteran actor Prem Chopra, known for his roles in nearly 400 films over five decades, was recently seen in the blockbuster film Animal. The actor rose to fame for playing antagonists in Rajesh Khanna’s movies such as Doli, Upkaar, and Do Raaste. In a new interview, he recalled anecdotes about his wedding. In 1969, Prem married Uma, who is the sister of actor Raj Kapoor’s wife, Krishna.

On the podcast Timeout with Ankit, Prem said, “Krishna ji (Raj Kapoor’s wife) asked around about me. She asked, ‘How is the guy.’ People said, ‘He is good. Has a great future.’ Then Raj Kapoor met me and said, ‘She is a very nice girl. Think about her.’ Prem replied, ‘Definitely, I will’.”

The veteran actor recalled how he warned the pandit to finish the wedding in five minutes. He said, “We were getting married at the Sun & Sand hotel, and I told the pandit, ‘Within five minutes everything should get over.’ But before that, I told Jeetendra, ‘You stand outside. See that no police comes.’ In those times, police would show up at weddings and accuse you of some crime, and women would show up and say, ‘I am pregnant with your child.’ I told Jeetendra, ‘Don’t let the police and women come inside, send then away’.”

In a previous interview, Prem had opened up about how his wife trusted him and didn’t believe the stories published about him and heroines. In an interview with Filmfare, he said, “Being from a film family, she was used to the stories. An outsider would have found it difficult. She trusted me. Also, the leading ladies were educated women, coming from good families. I enjoyed great friendship with the heroines. But there was no romantic involvement.”

The couple has three daughters– Rakita, Punita and Prerana.
