Piyush Mishra bashes Anurag Kashyap’s films to his face, says Gangs of Wasseypur and Dev D had rubbish second halves
Piyush Mishra said that he isn't a fan of the second halves of Anurag Kashyap's films. He said that Anurag has a tendency to spoil a good film on purpose.

Writer-lyricist-actor Piyush Mishra said that he dislikes the second halves of many of Anurag Kashyap’s films, including a couple that he has worked on himself. He said that he’s particularly annoyed by Gulaal, whose second half, according to him, spoiled the entire experience. He made similar comments about Gangs of Wasseypur and Dev D, and said that Anurag sabotages his own movies when he feels that he’s knocking it out of the park.
In a joint interview on the Humans of Cinema channel, which also involved actor Manoj Bajpayee, Piyush was asked if he ever revisits Gulaal and Gans of Wasseypur these days, and he said that he catches Gangs of Wasseypur on occasion, but he avoids Gulaal. Anurag said that Piyush is unfiltered in his opinions, and doesn’t even give reasons for why he dislikes certain films. He just calls them ‘bakwaas’ and moves on.
Piyush said, “I’m sorry, Anurag, I know I’m in the film, but I didn’t get the film’s second half. I have no idea what you did. That’s his problem. He makes half a good movie, then he spoils it. It’s like he can’t believe that he’s made such a good movie. He thinks, ‘Wow, this is a good movie, lets ruin it. Let’s make a rubbish second half’. That’s his problem. Gulaal was a good movie, and he went and spoiled it.”
Citing the example of more films made by Anurag, Piyush Mishra continued, “He’s done this to all his films. Look at Dev D. The first half was a classic, and then he ruined it.” Manoj Bajpayee agreed, and joked that Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s cameo ‘saved’ the film’s second half. Piyush Mishra continued, “I don’t know what his problem is. Gangs of Wasseypur had the same issue; he made the first part, then he lost his mind. I thought Dev D would be a film on alcoholism, and then it became something strange.”
Both Piyush and Manoj agreed, however, that Anurag is a ‘great maker’. “When the history of Hindi cinema is written, there will be time before Anurag Kashyap and after Anurag Kashyap. It doesn’t matter that he has… Forget it,” Piyush concluded, as Anurag laughed heartily. The filmmaker has multiple projects in the works. Kennedy is still awaiting release, two years after its premiere at Cannes; his film Bandar was recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival; his new movie Nishaanchi will be released in theatres.
