Akshay Kumar’s 2009 film Chandni Chowk To China, also starring Deepika Padukone, was hyped as his first Rs 100 crore film. However, it was a massive box office disaster. In a recent interview, the film’s director Nikkhil Advani recalled the film’s box office verdict and how a journalist stood outside his house and reported, “Yahape Nikkhil Advani rehta hai, jisne apke paise ki barbaadi ki hai. Uske ghar pe patthar pheko.(Here lives the man who wasted your money, throw stones at him).”
Recalling a horrifying incident post the film’s release, Nikkhil Advani shared that a journalist once stood outside his house with his camera crew. Pointing towards the director’s flat, the reporter said, ‘Yahape Nikkhil Advani rehta hai, jisne apke paise ki barbaadi ki hai. Uske ghar pe patthar pheko.(This is where Nikkhil Advani stays, who wasted your money. Throw stones at his building.)’ It was mad.” Nikkhil said that the journalist eventually worked with the director.
Nikkhil said, “I met him ten years later. By that time, I had my own production company. It was doing well, and he was working with somebody who was working with us. It’s karma. I didn’t remind him of what he did, my South-Bombay dignity stopped me from doing that.”
Speaking about what went wrong with Chandni Chowk To China, Nikkhil said, “I knew the movie is not going to do well.” He explained, “I knew the second half had a lot of problems. I tried to rectify it but there were too many captains of that ship. The producer of the film, Rohan Sippy, was very non-confrontational, so he stepped back. Warner Brothers had a point of view, Akshay had a point of view, and I had a point of view. So, democracy killed the film.” The film, made on a budget of Rs 65 crore, earned Rs 53.45 crore worldwide, according to Sacnilk.
