Parineeti Chopra: Shuddh Desi Romance is a gutsy film about today’s couples

In an exclusive conversation with Screen Big Picture at The Indian Express,Parineeti Chopra said: “This film will definitely surprise you. Usually in films,we see the hero and heroine looking very happy and in love. But,here we are talking about things that have never been spoken about in films. Young couples are now going through relationships that are directly from their hearts.”

Talking about the film’s writer Jaideep Sahni,she said: “Jaideep has written not a cooked-up story,but pieces from people’s lives.”

Directed by Maneesh Sharma of Band Baaja Baaraat,and based in Jaipur,Shuddh Desi Romance also features Kai Po Che actor Sushant Singh Rajput and newcomer Vaani Kapoor who will be marking her debut.

The script has been penned by Jaideep Sahni,who has written the scripts for movies like Chak De India and Bunty Aur Babli.

When asked what romance means to him,Jaideep confessed he has no idea of the term romance.

“This is the first time I’ve had to write a film on relationships. Shuddh Desi Romance is a story about three people trying to find the meaning of love,attraction and commitment.”

Jaideep gave us a bit of insight into the characters played by Sushant Singh Rajput,who plays a tourist guide in the film. “He’s a guy who is getting by life comfortably. Only thing missing in his life is love and so he is actively looking for it. Gayatri,on the other hand is more experienced in this department. She has had a number of relationships.”

When it comes to Vaani’s character Tara,Jaideep says she represents the kind of girl who has everything planned. However,he says,“The ones that go by the book are usually the ones who are dying to experiement.”

Director Maneesh Sharma is all praise for his female leads saying they have done a brilliant job. “Interesting part of these characters is that they want to follow their hearts…very brave. They are not rebellious but honest.”

The makers of the film could not stress enough on how real the film is. “Young lovers in our society are the cutting edge,” says Maneesh.

“They are the ones fall in love across castes,states,religions and cultures.

Jaideep says earlier films revolved around the couple falling in love and then they face some opposition to their union. But he explains,“With this generation,dating is different from love. Attraction is different from love and sometimes even marriage is different from love.”

Parineeti said the film is a clash between the tradition and modernity. “Internal conflicts are existent in today’s youth. I think the drama of family opposition is a thing of the past. Today’s youngsters are increasingly independent. They want to choose their own partners and accepting it. So these changes are definitely being reflected in our films,” she says.

Model-turned actress Vaani Kapoor said she always dreamed of working with late director Yash Chopra. However,she’s thrilled to debut with the Yash Raj Film banner. “I’ve been a very loyal audience to Yash Raj Films. And now,I’m very lucky to be on the other side as an artist.”

Director Maneesh said though the film revolves around romance and commitment,it is not just for youngsters. “Its open to everyone above 15. Firstly,it’s thoroughly entertaining; it’s about real people with real conflicts and situations. And secondly,it’s almost a dialogue from our end with the elders of our society. They may hate us or they may love us for it,” he says.

Parineeti says she consciously chose to be a part of Shuddh Desi Romance because it offers something new. “You’ll see your own story in the film,or your friends’ stories,” she promises. “Give Shuddh Desi Romance a chance,” she says.
