Director Pradeep Sarkar, known for making films like Parineeta, Helicopter Eela and Mardaani, has passed away. He was 67. Neetu Chandra confirmed to indiaexpress.com that Pradeep Sarkar passed away early on Friday morning at 3.30 am. She said, “He was admitted to a hospital last night. He was not keeping well for a long time, he was on dialysis and had other health issues too. His funeral will be today at 4 pm in Santacruz.”
As per reports, Sarkar was on dialysis and his potassium levels had dropped drastically. He was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
Director Hansal Mehta took to Twitter to pay tribute to the filmmaker. Actors Ajay Devgn and Manoj Bajpayee also shared his condolences. “The news of Pradeep Sarkar’s demise, ‘Dada’ to some of us is still hard to digest. My deepest condolences 💐. My prayers are with the departed and his family. RIP Dada 🙏,” Devgn wrote. Hansal Mehta shared, “Pradeep Sarkar. Dada. RIP.”
Filmmaker Onir shared his tribute on Twitter and wrote, “Waking up to another sad loss… too early…” Director Kunal Kohli shared, “Shocked & Sad to hear about Dada Pradeep Sarkar. Really sweet man. Had lovely conversations about cinema with him. RIP Dada.”
Lyricist Swanand Kirkire shared on Twitter, “Film maker and dearest friend Pradeep Sarkar the mad man left us this morning . Rest in peace Dada your passion for the art of cinema will stay in your works ! Duniya bhar ki mitti ikatthi karte the ab jannat ki mitti dibiya mein bharna .Thank you for loving me and my words 🙏🏽”
Sarkar was known for his work in the ad film industry. He also shot the now iconic music videos of songs like Euphoria’s ‘Dhoom Pichak Dhoom’ and ‘Maaeri’, and Shubha Mudgal’s ‘Ab Ke Saawan’, among many others in the 1990s and early 2000s.
He started working in the movies with Rajkumar Hirani and was credited as the co-editor of Munna Bhai MBBS. His first directorial film was Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt stareer Parineeta. Sarkar then directed Laaga Chunari Mein Daag starring Rani Mukerji, Konkona Sensharma and Abhishek Bachchan. His directorials also include Lafangey Parindey, Mardaani and Helicopter Eela. Helicopter Eela, which starred Kajol, was his last film. He recently directed the ZEE5 web series Duranga.
In October 2022, Kangana Ranaut announced that she would be playing the lead role in his upcoming film Noti Binodini.
