OMG 2, which features Akshay Kumar in an extended cameo, was released in theatres on August 11, alongside the juggernaut Gadar 2. The film, which also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam, got an opening of Rs 10.26 cr shared by industry tracker Sacnilk.

The film had 37.53 percent occupancy in Hindi across the country, which pales in comparison the 60 percent occupancy that Gadar 2 registered on opening day. OMG 2, directed by Amit Rai, shows Akshay as the messenger of Lord Shiva, who descends upon Earth to help a devout believer named Kanti Sharan Mudgal. Unlike the Kantilal of the prequel, this character has the utmost faith in God.

While unspectacular, the opening day numbers of OMG 2 aren’t as bad as the Rs 2.5 crore day one haul delivered by Akshay’s Selfiee earlier this year. OMG 2 is facing tough competition at the box office from Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 in the north, and in the South from Rajinikanth’s Jailer and Chiranjeevi’s Bholaa Shankar. Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, is still occupying some shows as it enters its third week.

Akshay is coming off of a series of commercial under-performers. Before Selfiee this year, he starred in flops such as Samrat Prithviraj, Bachchhan Paandey, Raksha Bandhan and Ram Setu.

Shubhra Gupta of Indian Express, in her review of OMG 2, wrote that “the film never wavers in its intent, sneaking in taboo topics in its laugh-out-loud comic tone, and for that it ropes in the gods, which is a brilliant ploy: you get them on your side, you can get away with anything, even things that would ordinarily be deemed ‘ashleel’ (vulgar).”
